Success Stories: Brian St. Hubert
Major/Degree:
MBA in Finance
Hometown:
Valley Stream, New York
Why
did you come to the Zarb School?
I enjoyed my undergraduate experience at Hofstra University and wanted
to return to my alma mater for my MBA.
Internship
Experience:
After attending several workshops and having numerous appointments
to review my resume and cover letter, I applied for an internship at HSBC. I
really like the culture and the atmosphere at the bank. Their global footprint
is unprecedented and it shows within the workforce, as it is a very diverse
environment. My proudest moment is when my manager told me that he was impressed
with my contributions to the project that I was assigned. Getting such feedback
really validated my position in banking, especially since my undergraduate
degree specialized in marketing.
How
did the Zarb School prepare you for your career?
As a former marketing student and professional, learning terms of
finance and banking in my accounting and finance classes were key to help me adapt
to the world of banking. In addition, being an officer of the Hofstra
Investment Banking Association (HIBA) allowed me to deepen my financial
knowledge and develop my network with experienced finance professionals in New York
City.
What
is your favorite memory/experience at the Zarb School?
Getting a senior speaker from
Berkshire Hathaway to campus to speak at an HIBA event was my favorite memory.
We learned so much and it was also a great networking opportunity.
What
advice do you have for students who want to follow in your footsteps?
Three words: Graduate Business Career Services/Network/Apply.
Graduate Career Business Services
Make full use of the Graduate Business Career Services resources.
Attend as many workshops as possible, have several counselors review your
resume and cover letter, and attend as many mock interviews as possible.
Network
Reach out to professionals who are working in your targeted
field. Use many networking outlets: Hofstra alumni, club/organization
(officers/ members/ alumni), family/friend connections, and LinkedIn. Ask for
informational interviews so that you can learn about the industry, find out
what the employers are looking for in a potential member of their company, and ask
pertinent questions based on research that you have done on the profession, the
company and the industry.
Apply
Do not be intimidated about applying for internships or
full-time positions. Apply to as many as you can. Each provide valuable
contacts and experience, leading you towards the profession that is right for
you.
