What Are Soft Skills and Why Should You Care?

Written by: Gabriella LoBue, MS Business Analytics, 2019

Oftentimes, students focus on their hard skills, such as software knowledge, bilingualism or certifications, when applying to jobs. However, most applicants overlook the value of soft skills. Put simply, soft skills are “people skills.” They demonstrate your ability to interact with your superiors and co-workers appropriately and effectively. Here are the top five critical soft skills to emphasize on your next job application and interview!

1. Teamwork
Departments very rarely operate as “one-man shows,” so it is inevitable that you will have to work with others in some capacity regardless of your industry or job title. Therefore, it is essential to show that you can work with your coworkers to quickly and successfully achieve a given goal. The better everyone can collaborate, the better the quality of work will be and, subsequently, the better the company will perform overall.

2. Flexibility
Murphy’s Law states that “anything that can go wrong will go wrong,” and the workplace is no exception. Employers like to know that in the event the company, a project or a process hits a bumpy road, their employees will stay calm and resilient. This prevents any further delays caused by panic or simply a negative attitude. Having quick thinking and self-motivation to push through unexpected challenges is invaluable.

3. Communication
Communication describes how you express yourself to others, whether verbally, written or through body language. It’s vital that you can clearly articulate your thoughts and ideas to others, and that you demonstrate a full understanding of what they say to you in return. Employers want to know that operations within the company run smoothly thanks to clear communication between departments and individuals.

4. Problem-solving
Those who can find solutions to problems on their own are a great asset to any company. Employers value employees who will take the initiative to fix any issues without complaining and delaying the process. It saves time and your supervisor’s energy if you can remedy complications and continue the flow of work independently.

5. Creativity
While creativity is a rather broad soft skill, it is a highly valuable skill to possess. Those who can innovate, challenge and/or reframe problems and solutions are desired among employers because they see beyond the obvious. Creativity helps companies stand out among their competitors. Similarly, it can help you stand out among other job applicants.

Now that you know what the top requested soft skills from employers are, you can begin incorporating or practicing them in your everyday actions and interactions! Refine your communication skills when speaking with professors or friends. Are you coming across clearly and concisely? Ask for honest feedback from your professors or friends to help you improve.  Expand your creativity with homework or project assignments by challenging yourself to take ideas one step further. Curiosity will lead you to creativity! The easiest way to improve your soft skills is by being aware of them at the moment and acknowledging how you can do things differently. Soon enough, they'll become second nature!

  4. Thanks for supporting the idea of 360 degree feedback. I’ve seen it create division in senior teams when handled incorrectly and seen transformation happen when used elegantly. It’s all about the intention and skill of those who facilitate the process.
